What to ask when life feels tricky
Hey you,
One of the most powerful things you can do for yourself is to ask: what is the story I’m creating here?
Just asking the question opens new possibilities. Because it calls our attention to the fact that we have the ability to influence the story we find ourselves in.
Will it solve all your problems? NOPE! (wouldn’t that be nice though?) But what it will do is crack open a new way to look at what’s going on in life, and that can change everything.
The question works in times of high conflict, in times of discontent, in times of transition, in times of wanting to try something new, in times of tricky relationships. And so much more.
Asking What story am I creating here? creates the space you need to see that you do have a choice.
There’s a beautiful concept in Buddhism that boils down to this: there’s the thing happening, and then there’s the story about the thing. The thing happening is neutral. It’s the story we make about the thing that creates suffering.
On the flip side of that, the story can also be where we make meaning. And power. And joy.
Want to learn more about the possibility for meaning, power, and joy within story-making? Join me and my colleague Emie Watters for OnPurpose: The Power of Midlife Stories. P.S. What story are you creating today?
